Researchers build silicon chip alternative
Swiss researchers have created the first computer chip made out of molybdenite (MoS2), a naturally occurring mineral that has been touted as a low-energy alternative to silicon.
The integrated circuit was made in the Laboratory of Nanoscale Electronics and Structures (LANES) at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL). The researchers said their experiments prove that molybdenite chips can be made smaller than silicon chips, use less electricity and be more flexible.

Setting aside the Golden Globe snubs and shockers for a moment, there's a lot of love flowing from the grateful chosen parties. MTV News has gotten very gracious and thrilled reactions from Globe nominees in film and television, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Elton John and David Duchovny.
"I'm honored to be nominated by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association today," DiCaprio said in a statement after his nomination for Best Actor in a Drama for "J. Edgar." "I was extremely humbled to work alongside [director] Clint [Eastwood] and the entire cast of 'J. Edgar,' and am very excited to be recognized for my work on the film. Thank you."
"I'm thrilled to be included in this beautiful group of actors and actresses," 25-time nominee Meryl Streep said of her Best Actress in a Drama nomination for "The Iron Lady." "I'm very proud of our movie and look forward to seeing everyone at the party in January."
"It is an absolute honor to be nominated," said Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical nominee Owen Wilson in a statement, who also picked up a SAG nomination for his work in Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris." "It was a great movie to work on, and I couldn't be happier to be recognized by the HFPA."
"I'm very touched by the HFPA's recognition of 'The Descendants' among so many other fine films this year, and I'm particularly gratified by the inclusion of Shailene Woodley along with George Clooney for acting honors," writer/director Alexander Payne said in a statement of his Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay nominations for "The Descendants." "I'm looking forward to the Golden Globes dinner and hope they provide a low-sodium option."
Elton John received his second nomination for Best Original Song for "Hello Hello," which he wrote with longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin for Disney's animated feature "Gnomeo & Juliet": "I am just thrilled that Bernie and I have been nominated for a Golden Globe. What a great end to a fantastic year!" John won the award in 1995 for "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from "The Lion King."
Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, whose "The Skin I Live In" was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, might win the award for most gracious reaction so far: "I am very happy with my Golden Globe nomination for my latest film 'The Skin I Live In,' " he said in a statement. "The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has always been very generous with me and I thank them from the bottom of my heart. I'm competing with other foreign films that are so fabulous; I don't mind being defeated by any of them. For me, the award will be being at the Beverly Hilton sharing dinner and mineral water with so many people I admire."
Turning toward the land of television, first-time nominee Zooey Deschanel sent out her reaction via a re-tweet of congratulations from "Office" actress Mindy Kaling. "omg. OMG. speechless! RT @mindykaling OMG @ZooeyDeschanel U R SO GANGSTA #GoldenGlobes #gowntime."
Best Supporting Actress nominee Evan Rachel Wood also took to Twitter to express her enthusiasm. "The only time it's ok to wake me up at 5 30 In the morning is when you are telling me I have been nominated for my second golden globe!"
Best Actor in a TV Comedy Series David Duchovny seemed humbled to receive his fourth acting nomination for his work on "Californication." "The Hollywood Foreign Press has always been supportive," he said in a statement. "As always, I am grateful for the recognition, especially with so many fine actors in comedy all across television, and, most of all, happy for everyone on the show as we all share in this. And the HFPA throws by far the best party of the endless awards season."
Veteran thespian and two-time Globe winner Jeremy Irons picked up his sixth career nomination for "The Borgias," which Showtime renewed for a second season earlier this year.
"I am delighted to be nominated for my work in Neil Jordan's 'The Borgias.' In truth I know it reflects the tireless efforts and exceptional talents of all those who bring this splendid series to the screen," he said of his nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a drama series. "Without the magnificent work in the costume and set design, script writing, lighting and camera work, and the constant care in the direction, production, and marketing, this series would not have grabbed its audience as it appears to have done. That I am surrounded by a talented and dedicated cast is self-evident. But, of course, if you want to nominate anyone, and escape with your life, then you'd better first nominate the Pope."
Mireille Enos was nominated for Best Actress in a drama series for "The Killing," alongside actresses Claire Danes ("Homeland"), Julianna Margulies ("The Good Wife"), Madeleine Stowe ("Revenge") and Callie Thorne ("Necessary Roughness").
"It feels like a very big deal," Enos told The Hollywood Reporter. "I wasn't expecting this at all. It feels really big. Now I need a really, really big dress."

'Dark Knight Rises' Prologue 'Will Have Your Jaw Drop'
Lucky fans who screened six-minute preview in NYC tell MTV News they love the action but can't understand what Bane is saying.

NEW YORK — Fans came out in droves Wednesday for a chance to take an early look at the first six minutes of Christopher Nolan's final Batman film, "The Dark Knight Rises."
The prologue screened as a part of a viral marketing campaign, which involved fans reading through "leaked" CIA documents and finding coordinates for cities around the world. When all the pieces fell into place, a secret website, OperationEarlyBird.com, revealed the locations and times for prologue screenings.
A line formed early outside the AMC Loews Lincoln 13 on the Upper West Side, and the excitement was palpable. The anticipation only grew as fans filed into the IMAX theater to await the six-minute preview. Once the preview ended, the crowd applauded and demanded a second viewing, to no avail.
Outside the theater, the most common reaction to the footage was jubilation, but some fans expressed reservations about Tom Hardy's voice as Bane.
"I thought it was really good," Tom Dichiara told MTV News. "It was a lot of action, good opening sequence. You can't really understand a whole lot of what Bane says, though."
"The action was crazy," Brian Sansone said. "They did sh-- in 'The Dark Knight' that I had never seen before, and they blew me away again. A lot more action-packed, just as intricate, just as crazy. If the rest of the movie is like that, they got my money."
"I loved it. Christopher Nolan just did an ingenious scene, a great action scene, something that will have your jaw drop. It was pretty amazing just watching it on the screen, saying, 'I never thought that would be possible,' " said Tyler Rice, who liked Bane's voice but struggled to understand it as well. "Bane's voice sounded awesome, but you can't understand what he's saying. He had about two clear lines you can hear what he's saying. Otherwise, it just sounded like awesome gibberish. It kind of sounds like Buffalo Bill [from 'Silence of the Lambs']."

Trey Songz Showcases His Rap Jones
With #LemmeHolDat 2, Trey Songz proves his rap worth, in Mixtape Daily.
By Rob Markman
Mixtape Daily Main Pick
Artist: Trey Songz
Mixtape: #LemmeHolDatBeat 2
Real Spit: Trey Songz has been walking with a rapper's swag ever since his 2005 debut I Gotta Make It so when the Virginia vocalist dropped his hip-hop mixtape #LemmeHolDatBeat in 2010, it didn't come as a surprise. This past November when Trigga Trey returned with his second rap mixtape, #LemmeHolDatBeat2, he made it clear that he takes his bars seriously.
The DJ Drama-helmed tape begins with Songz paying homage to hip-hop's fallen over "Jackin' for Beats." Over the course of three minutes and 41 seconds, Trey raps over a medley of beats popularized by the Notorious B.I.G., Tupac and Big Pun. The "Jackin' "concept was made famous by Ice Cube in 1990 on his Kill at Will EP. To prove his rap worth, Trigga glides over Biggie's "Sky's the Limit," Eazy-E's "Boyz-n-the Hood," Big L's "Put It On," Pun's "Still Not a Player" and 'Pac's "I Get Around."
On "She Will," Trey borrows Lil Wayne's instrumental of the same name and then invites Weezy to guest on "Don't Love Me." Of course Tunechi is the draw on the track's final verse, but Songz holds his own spitting clever lines like "Shorty runnin' game, so I never had to coach her."
Trey's strong suit is obviously his R&B vocals, but make no mistake: He can rap pretty damn well — better than some rappers. On "BeatNutz" he tackles the Beatnuts 2001 underground favorite "No Escapin' This," delivering playful bars like, "It's the incredible, rappers are edible/ No matter what I ever do, hate is what I never do."
Next up is Trey's 2012 album Chapter 5, and while he has collaborated with rappers like Twista, Nicki Minaj and Drake in the past, maybe this time he'll save a sixteen for himself.
Joints to Check For » "Jackin' for Beats" - "The tracks I used are all from the fallen soldiers of hip-hop, from Big to Eazy-E to 'Pac to Pun to Big L, but it's like a tribute to hip-hop."
» "Changes" - "[This is] one of the records that I'm most proud of as far as song structure, as far as lyricism, as far as hip-hop goes — it's very much a narrative. It's a story and it's so visual and descriptive, kind of like a ghetto tale where boy meets girl."
» "Don't Love Me," featuring Lil Wayne - "It's just basically speaking on the aspects of the fast lifestyle."
